China launches third Type 075 Amphibious Assault Ship

China launched a third Type 075 class amphibious assault ship at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai on 29th January. The Type 054A/P-class frigate of the Pakistani Navy was launched as well.

China has been constructing warships at a significant pace. The first ship was launched in September 2019, has yet to be commissioned or named. The second LHD was launched in April 2020 and began sea trials in December 2020.

The Type 075 landing helicopter dock (NATO reporting name Yushen-class landing helicopter assault) is a class of Chinese amphibious assault ship under construction by the Hudong–Zhonghua Shipbuilding company. The Type 075 helicopter dock is a new generation of amphibious assault vessels and far larger than similar ships previously constructed for the PLA Navy. The Type 075 would give the Chinese navy the ability to launch various types of helicopters to attack naval vessels, enemy ground forces, or submarines. The vessels will also be able to deploy landing craft and troops, plus house command and control operations.

The displacement of the Type 075 amphibious assault ship (AAS) is expected to be between 35,000 and 40,000 tons, nearly similar to that of the U.S. Navy’s Wasp class amphibious assault ships.

Chinese media leaks reveal that the Type 075 AAS will can carry between 28 and 30 helicopters of various types, including the large Z-8, the smaller Z-9 utility and the Z-10 light attack helicopters.

Armaments aboard the 237 meter-long ship include two H/PJ-11 30 mm (1.2 in) close-in weapon systems and two HHQ-10 surface-to-air missiles that are developed from TY-90.
