Germany is preparing one of the largest air defense acquisitions in its history. Under the NNbS program, the Bundeswehr has already ordered one prototype and 18 Skyranger 30 systems from Rheinmetall, with an option for 30 more. Now, Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger says a massive deal worth €6–8 billion could be signed by the end of 2025, covering up to 600 units delivered by 2035.
The Skyranger 30, mounted on an 8×8 Boxer armored vehicle, is a next-generation self-propelled air-defense system designed to counter drones, loitering munitions, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft. It features a 30 mm KCE revolver cannon with programmable AHEAD ammunition, short-range missiles like the Stinger, advanced radar, and electro-optical targeting. Capable of integrating into a layered C-UAS and SHORAD network, the system is built to defend both mobile forces and critical infrastructure.
From lessons learned in Ukraine to cutting-edge directed-energy weapon integration, the Skyranger 30 marks Germany’s return to a powerful mobile gun-based air-defense capability. Watch now to see how it works, its specifications, and what this record-breaking deal means for European defense.
