MH 60R and MH 60S Seahawk: The U.S. Navy’s Two Helicopter Workhorses

0

🎥 The U.S. Navy’s MH-60R Romeo and MH-60S Sierra may look almost identical, but these two Seahawk helicopters were designed for very different missions across the fleet.

🌊 The MH-60R Romeo is the Navy’s specialized maritime hunter, equipped for anti-submarine warfare, surface surveillance, and attack missions. Using dipping sonar, sonobuoys, radar, electro-optical sensors, torpedoes, and guided weapons, it can search far ahead of warships to detect and engage submarines and surface threats.

🚁 The MH-60S Sierra serves a broader combat-support role, transporting personnel and cargo, conducting vertical replenishment, search and rescue, medical evacuation, special operations support, personnel recovery, and anti-surface warfare. Its large cabin and flexible configuration make it a vital logistics and rescue platform for naval forces operating at sea.

⚓ Together, the Romeo and Sierra provide complementary capabilities across U.S. Navy aviation: the MH-60R helps the fleet detect and fight threats, while the MH-60S helps move, protect, rescue, and sustain the force during operations around the world.
