Turkish leading defence company “STM” which has a key role in meeting critical needs of the Turkish Navy, makes an assertive entry to navigational safety field with its IMO-coherent cutting-edge ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) dubbed as “STMDENGIZ ECDIS”.
With the development of the new ECDIS, STM achieved to be the first Turkish company that gains the EU Marine Equipment Directive (MED) ‘s “Wheelmark” certificate, which has universal validity. “STMDENGIZ ECDIS” will be outfitted both naval and merchant ships.
What’s ECDIS?
An Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is a geographic information system used for nautical navigation that complies with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations as an alternative to nautical paper charts.
ECDIS provides continuous position and navigational safety information. These systems generate audible and visual alarms when the vessel is in proximity to navigational hazards.
What does “STMDENGIZ ECDIS” offer to the users?
– Supporting navigational safety ;
The new ECDIS solution of STM will increase the navigational safety of naval ships and commercial vessels with its computer-based infrastructure that offers interfaces for auxiliary systems including AIS, Gyro, echo sounder, inertial navigation system.
It displays the information from Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) (vector charts that conform to the requirements for the chart databases for ECDIS) and integrates position information from the position, heading, and speed through water reference systems and optionally other navigational sensors.
– Contributing to navigational performance ;
STMDENGIZ ECDIS increases navigational awareness by integrating other auxiliary navigation systems, which increases the efficiency of the navigational plan by reducing the time to be used in the cruise plan and its evaluation.
In STMDENGIZ ECDIS, the map corrections are made automatically by electronic map producers and uploaded to the system. In this way, the navigation personnel’s burden is reduced, and the need for manual map corrections and long navigation plans are eliminated.
STMDENGIZ ECDIS, which has a user-friendly software, offers easy-to-use display functions and high operating performance. The system has various screen sizes, detailed route planning/editing options, and safety control functions.
STM: A key company of the Turkish Defence Industry :
STM has been strongly involved in the critical naval projects, particularly in the last decade. With the development of Turkish Navy National Corvette Program (MILGEM) (the indigenization rate is %70), STM has been authorized to improve Turkey’s indigenous capability of naval shipbuilding and modernization as well as using the deep-routed experience of Turkey to provide solutions for Turkish Navy and allied & friendly countries.
Within the scope of the Turkish Navy’s need, the company, which has been the main contractor of the “I” Class Frigate project, continues to work to deliver the first frigate in 2023 with an indigenization rate of at least 75%.
STM, which is also the main contractor of Turkey’s first intelligence ship “TCG UFUK”, also plays a critical role in the Turkish Navy’s submarine modernization and construction projects. In this context, STM completed the modernization of 2 “AY” Class Submarines (Type 209/1200) and worked as “pilot partner” in the modernization of 4 “Preveze” Class Submarines (Type 209/1300). STM also takes part in the New Type Submarine Project with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) System (Reis Class), which is accepted as an essential step for Turkey’s indigenous submarine project.
