U.S. Navy Upgrades USS Gerald R. Ford Arresting Gear to Boost Carrier Flight Operations

⚓ The U.S. Navy is preparing a major upgrade to the Advanced Arresting Gear, or AAG, aboard USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), with the modernization planned for fiscal year 2029.

⚙️ The upgrade will introduce an alternative fourth-engine solution, along with improved engine-room isolation, backup barricade capability, stronger fuse protection, and software enhancements.

✈️ The AAG has already supported tens of thousands of aircraft recoveries aboard USS Gerald R. Ford and has shown strong availability during recent operational deployments and sortie-generation testing.

🛡️ Greater reliability will be increasingly important as the Ford class expands operations with aircraft such as the F-35C and prepares for sustained combat missions in contested environments.

🌊 The AAG system will also equip future Ford-class carriers, including USS John F. Kennedy, USS Enterprise, and USS Doris Miller.
