Brazil procures four 76 mm guns from Leonardo for Tamandare project

Leonardo was awarded a contract worths more than 30 million euros to supply four 76 mm guns to the Brazilian Navy for Tamandare-class frigates.

Outfitting combatants with 76 mm guns was a solution on the table for the Brazilian Navy since 1980s but didn’t procure because of some political reasons, though the Italian company invested lots of time and resources to enter the Brazilian market.

The delivery of the guns to the Brazilian Navy could last more that 4-5 years, yet, due to the delays of the project there’s no official information promulgated by the authorities.

With this agreement, Leonardo now has 58 users of the different verisons of 76/62 gun worldwide.

The Tamandaré class are a new class of future general purpose frigates for the Brazilian Navy, based on the MEKO family of ships. The project is being developed by the Ministry of Defence and the Águas Azuis consortium, composed of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), Embraer Defense and Security, Atech and the Oceana shipyard. The construction of the four planned frigates will begin in 2021 and are scheduled to be delivered between 2025 and 2028.

The ship will be outfitted with OTO Melara 76 mm main gun, minimum eight VLS Sea Ceptor CAMM missile cells, Bofors 40 mm gun, two .50 machine guns, two triple Mark 46 anti-submarine torpedo launchers and two twin anti-ship missile launchers for MBDA Exocet MM40 block I-III or MANSUP. In addition to a propulsion system for diesel engines and a hangar capable of operating an SH-60 Seahawk, Super Lynx Mk.21B or Eurocopter EC725.
