Poland has launched ORP Wicher, the first of three Miecznik-class frigates being built for the Polish Navy under the largest naval shipbuilding program in the country’s history.
Based on Babcock International’s Arrowhead 140 design and built by PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia, ORP Wicher displaces around 7,000 tonnes and measures approximately 138 meters in length. The frigate is designed for air defense, anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine operations, with a planned combat configuration including Mk 41 vertical launch cells, CAMM-family surface-to-air missiles and RBS-15 anti-ship missiles.
ORP Wicher is expected to enter service in 2029 alongside future sister ships ORP Burza and ORP Huragan. The three vessels will replace Poland’s aging former US Navy Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates and expand the Polish Navy’s ability to operate in the Baltic Sea and alongside NATO naval forces.
