Built by the French company Nexter and named for General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque, who led the French 2nd Armored Division in World War II, this tank was developed in the 1980s and entered active service in 1992. Its real combat conditions experience started in Yemen under the United Arab Emirates armed forces.
