By The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut, or TNI-AL) has commissioned two new Teluk Bintuni-class landing ship tank (LST), KRI Teluk Weda (526) and KRI Teluk Wondama (527), on October 26, 2021.
The ships were handed over directly by the Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto to the Indonesian Navy at the PT. Bandar Abadi Shipyard.
The name KRI Teluk Weda-526 is derived from the name of a bay in Central Halmahera, North Maluku’s Central Weda District. The name KRI Teluk Wondama-527 is derived from the name of a bay in Papua Island’s Bird’s Head area.
Teluk Bintuni-class Tank Landing Ships
The Teluk Bintuni class, Indonesian designation AT-117M is a class of tank landing ships that is being built indigenously for the Indonesian Navy by various Indonesian local shipyards.
It was announced that the Indonesian Navy intends to acquire a total of twelve vessels of the same class with some modifications from the lead ship to improve the ship’s capability.
The two warships have an overall length of 117 meters, a width of 16.40 meters, a height of 7.80 meters with a maximum speed of 16 knots. Both have 20 days of endurance and are manned by a crew of 111 people. These two ships are capable of carrying 367 troops, 15 units of BMP-3F Tanks and one helicopter unit. Both are designed to carry the Army’s Leopard MBT and Marines’ BMP-3F tanks.
