On July 26, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding launched a new 94-metre multi-role response vessel (MRRV) at its Shimonoseki Shipyard for Philippine Coast Guard.

The ship is the first of two that Mitsubishi will provide to the Philippine Coast Guard under a new building contract awarded in February 2020.

The Philippine MRRVs were designed to be modified versions of the Kunigami-class patrol vessels used by the Japanese Coast Guard.

Each 94-metre MRRV will have a top speed of more than 24 knots, a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles, and the ability to operate in sea state six. Maritime law enforcement, search and rescue, and humanitarian and disaster relief will be primary functions.

The first MRRV is scheduled to arrive in the new homeport in March 2022, followed by the second three months later. These will be the largest vessels ever acquired by the Philippine Coast Guard, each measuring approximately 10 meters longer than the service’s current flagship, the offshore patrol vessel BRP Gabriela Silang.
