According to an Indian Navy press statement, the Indian and Japanese navies commenced the JIMEX bilateral exercise in the Arabian Sea on October 6. The drill is set to last until October 8.
The JIMEX series of exercises began in January 2012, with a strong emphasis on maritime security cooperation. JIMEX’s previous edition took place in September 2020.
The Indian Navy will be represented by the indigenously built Guided Missile Stealth Destroyer Kochi and Guided Missile Frigate Teg, both of which will be commanded by Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet. The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force will be represented by the JMSDF ships Kaga, an Izumo Class Helicopter Carrier, and Murasame, a Guided Missile Destroyer, led by Rear Admiral IkeuchiIzuru, Commander Escort Flotilla – 3. (CCF-3).
Along with ships, the exercise will include P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, integrated helicopters, and MiG 29K fighter aircraft.
JIMEX-21 intends to build a common understanding of operating procedures and improve interoperability by conducting a slew of sophisticated exercises spanning the whole range of maritime operations. Multi-faceted tactical exercises involving weapon firings, cross-deck helicopter operations, and complicated surface, anti-submarine, and air warfare drills will solidify the coordination created by the two fleets.
Over the years, India-Japan naval cooperation has grown in scope and complexity. JIMEX-21 will strengthen the two fleets’ collaboration and mutual confidence, as well as the two countries’ long-standing friendship.
