During drills in the Sea of Japan, the Russian Pacific Fleet’s Steregushchiy-class corvettes Gromky and Sovershenniy fired surface-to-air missiles at cruise missiles fired by a fake enemy, according to a press release from the Fleet’s press office.

“At a naval combat training range, the warships alternated between deploying to the assigned area and conducting air defence drills to sharpen their skills. The combat teams delivered missile fire from Redut surface-to-air missile systems against Malakhit target missiles fired from the missile corvette Inei, which acted as a fictitious adversary and was simulated by the combat teams. The air targets were discovered and locked on in a timely manner. The cruise missiles were successfully destroyed after they crossed the range of destruction, thanks to missiles fired from the corvettes by the Redut air defence systems, which were able to intercept and destroy them “According to a press release from the press office.

The standard operation was maintained by all of the systems, including the surface-to-air missile launchers. According to the Pacific Fleet’s press office, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assisted in the completion of the training exercise.

In accordance with the plan of the Pacific Fleet’s combat training, the missile firings were carried out, according to the press office of the Pacific Fleet.

The corvettes Sovershenniy and Gromky are the first and second serial-produced warships built at the Amur Shipyard as part of the Project 20380 program. The Sovershenniy entered service with the Russian Pacific Fleet in 2017, and the Gromky began operations with the Russian Pacific Fleet the following year. The Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau is responsible for the development of the corvette project.

The Russian missile corvettes of Project 20380 are designed to carry out green-water missions and strike enemy surface ships and submarines, as well as provide artillery support for an amphibious assault force in the event of a land invasion. A variety of artillery weapons, including surface-to-air missile/artillery systems, supersonic missiles, and automatic cannon launchers, are available to them for use. The Project 20380 corvettes have the capability of transporting a Ka-27 helicopter.
